Playing with the Sand
I offer sandplay in my office. This approach, first introduced by Margaret Lowenfeld in the 1920s and later coined as “sandplay” by Dora Kalff in the 1950s, promotes a “free and protected space” for clients of all ages to incorporate archetypes, symbols, senses, and the unconscious into visible form. I treat the tray similarly to a dream, in which there is no right answer or goal. However, despite the abstract nature of playing in the sand, I trust in the process’ ability to shift consciousness and traumatic wiring. The balance of consciousness and unconsciousness involved in sandplay creates a nurturing opportunity to feel, without the need for labels and words. I deeply enjoy utilizing Sandplay Therapy with my clients, as a way to share in the collective unconscious.
